PM invites US firms to tap Pakistan’s investment potential in emerging sectors, citing major economic reforms
NEW YORK: Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, on Friday invited the American businesses to tap into Pakistan’s vast economic potential, highlighting the country’s investor-friendly policy framework and massive reforms undertaken by his government to safeguard foreign investments and foster high-growth business climate.
The prime minister met with joint delegation of the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) and the US-Pakistan Business Council (USPBC), on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly here, where he said Pakistan was making efforts to support peace initiatives in the region, stressing that long-term regional peace was important for promoting business and investment.
He invited the US firms to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan, highlighting agriculture, mining and minerals, information technology, energy security, ports and shipping, and privatization as key areas of potential cooperation.
The Council, he said served as an important bridge between Islamabad and Washington and emphasized the need to translate improved bilateral relations into greater trade and investment.
He said Pakistan’s economy had achieved stability and was moving towards growth, while acknowledging that the ongoing Gulf crisis had created challenges.
He highlighted the structural reforms being undertaken by the government, including digitization of the economy, reforms in the Board of Revenue and expansion of e-governance.
Discussing investment opportunities in agriculture, Prime Minister Shehbaz said Pakistan offered significant potential through the use of modern technology and machinery, including harvesters and other equipment, to increase per-acre yields, improve efficiency and reduce production costs.
He also identified mining and minerals as another major area of investment, saying Pakistan was endowed with substantial natural resources.
The prime minister said the country’s young population was another major asset, particularly in the fields of information technology and artificial intelligence. He said the government was working to empower young people through vocational and skills training and create opportunities for productive employment.
He also highlighted Pakistan’s potential in energy security, including oil, petroleum and gas, as well as investment opportunities in ports and shipping.
Prime Minister Shehbaz further invited the US business community to participate in Pakistan’s privatization programme.
He said Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) had been privatized and expressed confidence that its new Pakistani owners would improve its performance. He added that a bank had also been privatized, while the government was expediting the process of privatizing power distribution companies in various provinces.
The prime minister said the government was offering several other areas to the private sector, emphasizing that the government’s role was to facilitate and support the private sector rather than become a participant in commercial activities. He said Pakistan was ready to welcome US investors and engage with them on areas of mutual interest.
The meeting was attended by senior representatives of U.S. companies doing business with Pakistan including Boeing, Abbott, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Resecurity, Mastercard, Nvidia, ETS Capital, TRG International, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Northshore Medical Lab, Reckitt, Visa, and Excelerate Energy.
President USPBC, Esperanza Jelalian, thanked the Prime Minister for his continued engagement with the U.S. enterprises and briefed the Prime Minister regarding plans of the US Chamber of Commerce to promote investment opportunities offered by Pakistan.
President BCIU, Peter Tichansky, highlighted the interest of the BCIU member companies in scaling up existing investments and exploring new partnership avenues.
Both USPBC and BCIU assured the Prime Minister that they will continue to remain closely engaged with the Government and the private sector of Pakistan to enhance cooperation.
He recognized Pakistan as an important destination for US businesses in view of its market size and youthful human resource.
In their respective remarks, the USPBC and BCIU members briefed the Prime Minister on their business interests in Pakistan and their plans to enhance their presence in the country.
The Prime Minister was assisted by Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister, Minister for Finance & Revenue, Minister for Defence, SAPM Tariq Fatemi, Chairman PVARA Bilal bin Saqib , Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar, and Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States Rizwan Ahmed Sheikh.

Health minister orders probe into Sindh MDCAT complaints
ISLAMABAD:Federal Minister for Health Syed Mustafa Kamal has taken notice of alleged irregularities in the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) held in Sindh and ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the complaints.
According to official sources, the minister directed a five-member committee, including the President of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), to conduct a transparent investigation and submit its report within 15 days.
The committee has been tasked with examining the complaints and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the alleged irregularities during the examination, sources said.
The minister directed the committee to complete the inquiry within the stipulated timeframe and present its findings for further action in accordance with the applicable rules.

CDA chairman directs faster work on Expressway East project
ISLAMABAD: Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Sohail Ashraf has directed officials to accelerate work on the Islamabad Expressway Service Road East project while ensuring strict compliance with approved designs and construction standards.
During an inspection of the project on Saturday, the chairman reviewed progress and was briefed on ongoing works and the next phase of development.
He directed the project director and relevant departments to maintain continuous field monitoring and quality control and ensure effective traffic management to minimise inconvenience to commuters.
The chairman described the Expressway East project as an important infrastructure scheme for improving connectivity, traffic flow and road capacity in the capital. He also stressed that construction quality should not be compromised in efforts to meet the project timeline.
During the visit, he was also briefed on an ongoing enforcement operation against unauthorised and illegal construction along the Islamabad Expressway.
According to the CDA, 377 buildings have been identified for action, including 281 commercial structures. So far, 58 buildings have been sealed, while 124 buildings between Sohan and Khanna bridges have been marked for demolition.
The authority said Rs234.685 million had been recovered through land-use conversion, unauthorised construction and de-sealing charges. Around Rs3 billion remained recoverable under applicable regulations in connection with land-use conversion and violations relating to unauthorised construction, setbacks, floor area ratio and covered area.
The chairman directed the relevant departments to ensure strict enforcement of building-control and land-use regulations, particularly mandatory fire-safety requirements.
The enforcement operation is being conducted by the CDA’s Building Control Section and Enforcement Directorate in coordination with the district administration and Islamabad police.

PESHAWAR: Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi on Saturday held a meeting with a delegation of Gilgit-Baltistan ministers at the Governor’s House here and discussed the country’s political situation and other matters of mutual interest.
The delegation comprised Gilgit-Baltistan Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Zulfiqar Ali Murad, Minister for Health Iqbal Hassan and Minister for Education Aman Ali Ameer.
During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on the prevailing political situation in the country and various issues of mutual interest. They also discussed the recent elections in Gilgit-Baltistan and the Pakistan Peoples Party’s success in the polls.
The visiting ministers were taken on a tour of the Governor’s House. Governor Kundi presented them with traditional shawls and caps.
